chronic absenteeism?
Missing 10% or more of the school days in the year. That is, missing approximately one month of classes on consecutive or intermittent days, with or without justification.
Chronic absenteeism in Chile
In Chile, before the pandemic, 1/3 of students (34.5%) had chronic absenteeism. In 2023, this figure rose to 52.8%, affecting 1 out of every 2 students.

Absenteeism always has serious consequences, but the more a student misses, the more serious the damage.
There is ample evidence of the consequences of absenteeism in a variety of settings.
Consequences of chronic absenteeism:
- Poorer academic performance at all levels.
- Difficulties in making friends.
- Increased probability of desertion.
- Inability to develop habits necessary to succeed in life.
- Longer future layoffs and lower salaries than their peers.
- Increased chances of unwanted pregnancies.
